The Federal Government says it has released N400 billion from the 2016 budget to implement capital projects and an additional N60 billion will be released in a few days time. Addressing newsmen on the state of the economy, Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, disclosed that “over N400 billion has been released so far from the allocated funds for capital expenditure. We are holding another meeting today (Friday) for N60billion to be released in a couple of days. We have been pumping money into the economy since May when the budget was signed.” Speaking on the recession that the country has slid into, the finance minister assured that the country will come out of it. However, to overcome recession, Adeosun insisted that “if we stick to what we are doing: fight corruption, redirect stolen funds to the economy, cut out wastage, duplication and leakages, continue with the payroll clean up of the N165bn Federal Government wage bill monthly, the economy will recover....

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, says he is very disappointed with the insistence of the Lagos State governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2015 election, Jimi Agbaje, not to step down for him over the national chairmanship contest of the party. George, who supported Agbaje during the governorship election, said he expected that Agbaje would do the same for him on his ambition to become the next chairman of the PDP. After months of rigorous scrutiny of the budget by the President Muhammadu Buhari, he finally puts pen to paper today to sign the 2016 Nigerian budget, in his company was the vice president, senate president Saraki and speaker Yakubu Dogora It would be recalled that the President has rejected and returned the proposed budget presented to him by the senate on three different occasions over unsatisfactory elements made in the budget and even set up committees to oversee the said budget over the past two weeks. FOR the third time the 2016 appropriation bill has been returned as President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have picked faults in the re-worked budget and returned it to the National Assembly for further legislative work. It was reliably gathered that the re-worked budget was sent to the president at about 1: 15am on Tuesday but was returned to the National Assembly at about 12.00 noon Tuesday. It was also gathered that principal officers and members of the review committee from both legislative chambers met at about 3.20pm till about 5.30pm in the Senate wing to reconsider the observations made by the president on the budget. President Muhammadu Buhari has returned the controversy-ridden 2016 budget to the National Assembly, pointing out areas of concern in the document and demanding adjustment. The spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Abdurazaq Namdas, (APC-Adamawa State) confirmed this to journalists on Thursday. “I can confirm to you that we are in possession of the letter from the president identifying grey areas,” Mr. Namdas said. He said the leadership of the House and that of the Senate as well as their respective relevant committees would meet on the development. He, however, refused to mention the “grey areas” saying they would be made known to Nigerians in “due course”.The National Assembly passed the budget on March 2 and later transmitted it to Mr. Buhari for assent. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Mr. Warimopei Dudafa, a former close aide – Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs – to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. Dudafa, alongside Jonathan’s ex Aide-de-Camp, Colonel Ojogbane Adegbe, was accused of giving N10bn to delegates at the PDP primary in December 2014 in which Jonathan emerged as the winner. The money was diverted by the Office of the National Security Adviser from a Signature Bonus Account in the Central Bank of Nigeria. The N10bn is believed to have been stolen from Nigeria’s oil receipts as follows: $5m (November 14,2014); $47m( November 27, 2014); €4m (December 3, 2014) and €1.6m (December 24, 2014)While Col. According to The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ali Modu Sheriff, is still under investigation for alleged corruption. Sheriff was arrested by the commission in June last year for alleged embezzlement of public funds during his eight years as governor of Borno State but was granted bail. His government was said to have received over N300bn from the Federation Account between 2003 and 2011, an amount alleged to have been mismanaged by Sheriff. The ex-governor of Borno State was subsequently detained from June 3 to June 4, 2015 and released on administrative bail without being charged to court.
