President Muhammadu Buhari has finally reacted to the political violence in Rivers state.
Buhari, who is now in Malabo Equatorial Guinea, issued a statement through his media aide Femi Adesina saying that the killing of people over political differences was primitive, barbaric and unacceptable.
He said:
“We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard.
President Buhari said that the electoral commission will be encouraged to discover the possibility of Nigerians abroad voting in the 2019 general elections.
He stated that some African countries have commenced allowing their residents abroad to vote in national polls, adding that he fully sympathized with the desire of Nigerians in the diaspora to vote in polls.
Buhari vowed that he will therefore do all within his powers to fulfill that wish.
“I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their right to choose their leaders,” the president said.
The leader of the nation announced that his government’s main area of focus now was reducing the level of poverty in Nigeria. The president added that developing the infrastructure needed to boost production in all sectors of the economy and create more jobs for young Nigerians, as well as other actions that will directly improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians will continue to be prioritized by his administration.
President Buhari was speaking with the members of the Nigerian community about the absence of direct flights between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
“We will be merciless and relentless in pursuing all those who abused public trust. Nigerians will see how some of the elite conspired to run the nation down,” he said.
Killings that occurred in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers state, saw the gruesome murder of Franklin Nkukuru Obi, his wife and son.
However, the Governor Nyesom Wikehas dismissed claims that recent killings in the state have been politically motivated and targeted at members of the APC. He said that the violence in state is clashes of rival cult groups fighting for supremacy.
